Dedicated to D. N. Dunlop and W. J. Stein

About

A little less than 80 years ago, with World War II a few years away, D.N. Dunlop, a far-sighted Scotsman, asked W.J. Stein, who in a faithful chain of events had come to England, to publish a journal with name “The Present Age.” Shortly afterwards in May 1935 D.N. Dunlop died.

However, W.J. Stein was determined to honor his friends request. And so the first issue was published in December 1935. In the first article of this issue he explained to his readers the origins of the journal: “The origin of this journal was Mr. D.N. Dunlops idea, and the title ‘The Present Age’ was his choice. He wanted me to create this journal and he hoped to write the introductory article.” (We have republished this article here.)

We think that most of the content of The Present Age is of extreme relevance today, especially the impulses of Dr. Steiner, D.N. Dunlop, and Dr. Stein that shine through its articles. Most of those ideas have yet to be fully grasped and may prove to be fruitful to our current challenges.

One example is the World Energy Conference that was founded by D.N. Dunlop. On the history of the World Energy Council, W.J. Stein wrote the following lines:

β€œIn 1924 Mr. Dunlop founded the World Power Conference. In reality he wanted to found a World Economic Conference. In this connection he said to me:
β€˜I could see clearly that it was impossible to bring together politicians, and all the important economic decisions are in the hands of the politicians. It was hopeless to found an international economic body as a first step. But it was possible to bring together human beings in the field of technical questions, and so I started there. But I had always the idea of enlarging the body of the body of engineers to all branches of industry and agriculture I wanted not only to include the producers and distributors but also the consumers and consider their point of view’”

If we can encourage and stimulate your own thoughts about the present age, our goal has been met.

    Dear Editors –

Thank you from my heart for making this material available. I, too have been searching especially for Stein’s “The Earth as a Basis of World Economy” and have experienced it is indeed the seminal document connecting Dr. Steiner and DN Dunlop. Considering they met April 1922, the year RSteiner announced his return to his closest associates and the lecture series from 1909 “The East in Light of the West” was re-published , their economic work together from Germany to America has certainly only just begun ! Also, as we are currently exactly 100 years from R Steiner’s spiritual work together with the Etheric Christ and his announcing of such of the return in the etheric world in 1910, I must say this appears to be the perfect time for the earthly economic work to move forward. I have been waiting many years to read these documents so thank you , thank you, thank you for putting the effort forth. It means a great deal. – CRS

Any idea on the significance of the World Energy Council’s logo? I browsed through its website but can’t seem to find information on its meaning.

Thanks for your comment. Interesting question! But I have no idea on its significance beyond speculation.

  5. Dear Marcus

I’ve pasted the same comment under four of your posts (October 31 2011, November 2 2010, October 16 2010, August 8, 2010), as my remarks refer each of these. Could you please ensure that only the last of each comment I pasted remains on your blog. My first efforts defaulted when I tried to italicise using HTML tags.

    Yours warmly,
    Nicolaas
