With the Lisbon Treaty entering into force on December 1st, 2009, the question “What is Europe?” is an important and timely subject.
In this article, published first in The Present Age, Vol. II, December 1936, W. J. Stein tries to describe the mission of Europe by looking at historic developments within Europe. He first identifies four sources of spiritual forces (East, West, North and South) that come together in Europe and are at the root of European history. How this mixture develops and how the individual tasks of some countries evolve are sketched in the subsequent paragraphs.
Stein concludes with the following words:
“They [the peoples of Europe] must experience the fact that they have a common European civilization, in which they live in manifold ways, according to their several characters. They can only do this if they give one another the liberty to do so, with equal justice for all, and with united cooperation amid psychological diversity.”
This article of Walter Johannes Stein may help to make up your mind about what has to be done in Europe to secure a prosperous and peaceful development in the very future.
